About Lanzhou University of Technology

Lanzhou University of Technology, a university of science and engineering with a long history, is located in Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu Province, which was once an important fortress on China’s historic Silk Road. The university was first established in 1919 as Gansu provincial Technical School. In 1958, the school was renamed Lanzhou Polytechnic Institute. In the same year, the Institute was renamed as Gansu University of Technology after merging with Gansu Jiaotong College.


In 1965, the University expanded when three academic programs from Northeast Heavy-Machine Building Institute and one from Beijing Machine-Building Institute merged and became a part of the University. These programs were part of First Machine-Building Industry Ministry of China prior to transfer. Subsequent to the reorganization of the State Council of China in 1998, the University is administrated by both the central and local government, with the local government having the major responsibility for operation. The University was renamed as Lanzhou University of Technology in 2003.

After 95 years of development, the university has become a comprehensive and well-recognized scientific and technological institution of high education. The University has great strength in engineering, a strong foundation in science fields and excellent programs in liberal arts. It has built a multi-disciplinary, multi-level, multi-type academic system which including many doctoral, master’s and bachelor degree programs. The university plays an important supporting role in the social and economic development of Northwest China.

The university now has 16 provincial key academic and research programs, 5 post-doctoral research stations, 5 level one (national level) doctoral programs, 25 level two doctoral programs, 18 level three master programs, 91 level two master programs, 18 Master of Engineering and professional license of Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Accounting (MPAcc) programs, 68 undergraduate majors and 6 national special programs. The Hi-Tech center of the university is among the first batch approved at the national level. The university also has two national scientific and technological innovation centers, 5 national laboratories and engineering research centers, 31 provincial research institutes, 20 university-enterprise cooperative technology engineering centers and 32 other research institutes.

The university has 20 colleges and one teaching department. About 43,189 students study in the university including 4,032 students for doctoral and master degree programs and 22,042 full-time undergraduates. There are 1,506 full-time faculty and staff in the university including one part-time academician from the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences, 191 professors, 472 associate professors. Among them, 411 serve as doctoral and master’s degree program advisors.

Our campuses are built and designed for the very purpose of speeding up and enhance our student body, cultivating academics through our faculty and staff and furthering the college experience for everyone in the university. The total area of the two (East and West) campuses is vast 1.62 million square meters with building area of 996,000 square meters. There are a library collection of 1.68 million volumes, 10,200GB e-books and other digital resources on campus. We have a well equipped language center with total area of over 1,000 square meters and more than 200 sets of equipments valued at more than RMB3.5 million. The center has 13 sets of language equipments, 6 sets are digital, 7 sets are analog. The center has total seats of 680 which can accommodate many aspiring language learning students.

The university's academic standards continue to improve. The core journal articles and EI papers published are ranked number 90 and number 75 each among all the universities. The authorization number and the application number of patent are ranked the first in Gansu province during last seven years and ranked top 60 among all the universities.

The university is actively developing international exchanges and cooperation with more than 60 universities of the United States, Britain, Russia, Japan, Australia and other countries. A good number of visiting scholars abroad are invited each year and the university also sends many faculty and staff overseas. In 2012, the university became a member of China/Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Scholarship Program.

The School of Chinese Language and Literature & School of International Education has a Chinese Language Teaching Center. There are many excellent Chinese language teachers for international students in the center. The school is undertaking the academic program establishment of Chinese Language & Literature and International Education, and is responsible for foreign students’ enrollment, management, activities and Chinese students study abroad program.
